Someone at work today asked me about the use of the @ to refer to Latinos and Latinas in the writings of the Latina/o theologians of the United States. She found my response helpful so I thought I would share it with you.
St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians (2:5-11) describes Jesus's coming to us as kenosis. Kenosis means self-emptying or pouring out one's self. Kenosis is also another word for immigration. Jesus is a border God or God on the border with his Father al otro lado (on one side of the border) and his mother and step-father de este lado (on this other side of the border).
As a young man I was introduced to the spiritual practice called the “examination of conscience”. It is a good way of reflecting on yourself and your life in order to improve it along the lines of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The examination calls us to consider the wrong we’ve done and it even calls us to consider our sins of omission, which is to say the good we could have done and didn’t.
